CHAPTER 4: CRAFTING REDSTONE TRAPS

Traps are another practical and technically impressive application for Redstone. The same info needed for crafting weapons will be just as useful here, so be sure to brush up on your logic circuit know-how.

22. Door Alarm

This trap is pretty innocuous, and intended to annoy more than anything. Combine with a tripwire trap for a security alarm. To really frustrate other players, make sure that there is no delay in the sound so it never stops. A good prank you can pull with these is combining the alarm with a set of pistons and note boxes and installing them directly under a player’s house. They won’t know where it’s coming from!

23. Tripwire Trap

This is ideal for pulling pranks or setting traps in the dark, as tripwires can be relatively easy to direct in bright light or during the daytime if you know where to look. The only indication those who fall for the trap will get, however, is a small ‘click’ when it activates. Usually a tripwire trap is made with string connected to another trap or mechanism of your choice.

One thing to consider when building a tripwire trap, though, is that the ends of the trap will put out signals when it is destroyed, or when something makes contact with it.

24. Tree Trap

In order to execute this clever trap, you need four things: a Redstone block, a clock, TNT, and a piston. Keep in mind that a piston will not move blocks if the stack is higher than 13 units.

To build this, dig a few blocks lower than the bottom of a tree, and set the Redstone block three blocks or so below the end of the trunk. Then, 13 blocks down the tree trunk, place a piston so that it is facing upwards. In order to set off the mechanism, use a clock and set some TNT blocks so that they are diagonal in relation to the Redstone block you first set down.

Cover all of the holes you dug in the process of making this trap and wait for a player to try and cut down the tree. What will happen is the piston will activate, pushing the blocks above it, including the Redstone block and surrounding TNTs. Once the TNTs are activated by the Redstone, everything in the surrounding area will blow up!

25. Pitfall Trap

This trap is less useful in multiplayer mode, and more meant for combating and eliminating monsters. Here’s how it works:

-First, build a pit, and make sure to dig deep.

-Put a block above the pit and a sticky piston two blocks away from it.

-Set a pressure plate on top of the block covering the pit and, using a Redstone torch attached to the side of the block and a small trail of Redstones, connect it to the sticky piston. This will make it stick to the block.

Basically, how it works from here is this: when a monster steps on the pressure plate, the piston will detach and the block will be pulled away from the pit, causing them to fall.
